Jean Mercereau completed his doctoral thesis in 2002 at La Sorbonne University (Paris) on “The Evolution and Characteristics of an Irish Newspaper of Record: the Irish Times 1859-1999”. Since then, he has given papers and published various articles about the press of the Republic of Ireland. He is presently teaching English at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão in Leiria, Portugal, and is a researcher in the area of Irish culture at the University of Minho in Braga, Portugal, with a project entitled: “De Valera’s Ireland and Salazar’s Portugal: Irish newspapers and the Portuguese Estado Novo, 1928-1974”.
