Angela Vaupel-Schwittay is a scholar in Cultural Studies, Linguistics and Education. She holds the position of Senior Lecturer in International Studies at St Mary’s University College, a college of Queen’s University Belfast. Her teaching is primarily situated within European cultural and area studies, with a thematic focus on the intellectual and cultural history of Europe, representations of identity and otherness, transnational memory cultures, and the role of cultural media in shaping socio-political imaginaries. Angela’s research adopts an interdisciplinary approach to Cultural Studies, with particular specialisms in Film Studies, Exile Studies, German and Irish Studies, and identity theory. She has published in peer-reviewed journals, monographs and edited volumes. Her body of work includes critical studies on women in National Socialist cinema, German-Jewish and exile literatures and their reception histories, cinematic representations of minority identities, memory and borders in European film, as well as Irish-German cultural relations and transnational encounters. A recurrent strand throughout her research – often explored through a gender-sensitive lens – is the negotiation of cultural exchange, cross-cultural appropriation and the enduring consequences of cultural mis-recognitions. Questions of conflict, particularly within the historical frameworks of Ireland and Germany, constitute another significant axis of her scholarly inquiry.
